Simple and Easy 10-Point Plan

The Community Green Megatrends® project and Environmental Hall of Fame® are activities of the National Sustainability Association®.

We believe the Community Green Megatrends® project is the ultimate grass roots, ’Think Global Act Local’ green project in the United States.

We believe that the Community Green Megatrends® project is the most powerful sustainability education program in the United States to help cities implement their green initiatives.

Therefore, we believe this would be the best program to help each city to go green and thereby reduce the potential for climate change.

Below is a simple and easy 10-point plan to help ignite your community’s enthusiasm about your city’s green initiatives and support the city administration to do even more:

  1. We place the city’s 12 top green initiatives on a poster. These are called the 12 Green Megatrends®. The 12 Green Megatrends® provide the most holistic approach to reducing the effects of climate change. The 12 Green Megatrends® are highly correlated with the 12 recommendation of the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.
  2. One Green Megatrends® is designated for each month. These are referred to as the Green Megatrends® Months.
  3. The poster is edited by the city and made into a quilt.
  4. The quilt travels around the city. This display of the quilt allows the city administration to receive gratitude and support from the community for its environmental initiatives. (Community members could “like” the city’s quilt Facebook page.)
  5. The city can create a one-page explanation for each of the images on the quilt (drawn from their website or sustainability plan). The explanation can include 10 questions and answers that are made into a lesson plan for students and interested community members.
  6. The explanation (or half hour lesson plan) allows students to learn each one of the 12 Green Megatrends® on a monthly basis. These explanations or lessons allow the complex approach to green education to be simplified into easily understood monthly segments.
  7. Schools can implement green solutions in their school or community recommended by each of the monthly segments. Schools will compete and cooperate with other schools to implement green solutions each month. It will increase school spirit.
  8. Schools with the most points each month will be able to “Capture the Quilt.” They will have their photo taken with the Community Green Megatrends® Quilt (perhaps at an assembly). “Capture the Quilt” is like the “Capture the Flag” game.
  9. The result of this program is that the students and community will be much more supportive of the city’s green initiatives. Therefore, they will take more ownership of the city’s green initiatives. The city will receive support to adopt more green initiatives to help reduce the potential for climate change.
  10. Quilts from each city will be displayed along with the World’s Largest Environmental & Calendar Quilt at a landmark location. On Earth Day 2013 the World’s Largest Environmental & Calendar Quilt will be displayed at the Chicago Merchandise Mart, the World’s Largest LEED Certified Building. This display will give national publicity to each city’s Community Green Megatrends® Quilt and inspire enthusiasm from the students and community in every city.
